The importance and characteristics of fatty acids elongases
Keywords:
elongases, elongation of fatty acids, fatty acid synthase (FAS), acetyl-Co A carboxylase (ACC)Abstract
In humans and other mammals, the fatty acids, taken up by the diet or synthesized de novo, are further elongated into very long chain fatty acids. Elongation process is catalyzed by transmembrane enzymes, which are found mainly in endoplasmic reticulum. Fatty acid elongases enzymes can be divided into two major groups: elongases involved in the elongation of saturated and monounsaturated VLCFA (ELOVL 1, 3, 6, 7) and elongases of polyunsaturated fatty acids (ELOVL 2, 5). ELOVL 4, due to the specificity of substrates, is not included in any of these groups. This article describes in details the genes that encode elongases as well as role of these enzymes in a lipid metabolism.
