Abstract

Introduction: One of the major challenges of public health in the 21st century is the proper care of disabled people. Because of their disability they have definitely hindered existence. The disability often affects the increasing difficulties in everyday life and steadily deteriorates their wellness. The authors have investigated blind and visually impaired young men who, because of their disability, have limited mobility and capabilities of doing physical exercise. This can affect the worse work of respiratory and circulatory systems and finally lead to significant reduction in physical efficiency of the organism.

Materials and methods: The basic spirometric parameters were measured and the percentage fat content was determined in the group of young men from Braille’s Center in Bydgoszcz. The obtained results were correlated with the degree of visual impairment determined according to Snellen’s table. The spirometric parameters were compared with the results obtained by healthy men of the same age.

Results and conclusions: The values of spirometric parameters of men from Braille’s Center are independent on degree of visual impairment. All measured parameters in the healthy group are higher than in disable one. There is not observed increasing of parameters with age in the second group. It can be achieved by more intensive physical activity of blind and visually impaired young men conducted under the supervision of a doctor.
