Material and methods: The research was conducted using 179 women with an average age of 47,1 years, living in Leżajsk, Lubaczów and the surrounding communities. Our method of research consisted of a multiple choice questionnaire, prepared by the author, which evaluated the level of knowledge concerning the prevention of incontinence, as well as the patients level of interest in a deeper knowledge and the form of education.

Respondents showed a very low level of medical knowledge about the factors which cause incontinence. Respondents with a university education (80.95%) compared with respondents with an occupational education (54,55%) and an ordinary school education, more often believed that incontinence was a disease which can be treated. Among respondents, 75 % said that they would like to increase their knowledge of the disease.

Conclusion: The prevalence of incontinence is showing a resistance to preventive measures. There is a need for patient education concerning incontinence and patient behavior modification.
