Association Against Lung Cancer as a factor of patients’ social support
Keywords:
Association Against Lung Cancer, social supportAbstract
Introduction: Social support can generally be defined as the presence of positive, auxiliary and protective attitudes in relation to other people.
Aim: The aim of this study was to analyze the role played by the Association Against Lung Cancer in providing postoperative social support for patients operated on due to lung cancer, along with educational support intended for their families.
Material and Methods: This study analyzed activities undertaken by the Association Against Lung Cancer between 1994 and 2010. The analysis was based on a literature review along with a case study of the Association.
Results and Conclusions: Studies on social support and correlations between social support and health or disease were initiated as early as 40 years ago. Patients who have recovered from lung cancer know that they are rather lucky, having won the battle for their lives. Social support experienced by patients and their families from Pomerania and Western Pomerania provinces should be seen as an example and induce similar activities in other Polish centers of thoracic surgery.
