Sociodemographic determinants of functional state of women after radical surgical treatment for breast cancer – mastectomy

Introduction: Social structure has an impact on the incidence of certain diseases, human life span and the perception of the illness and reaction to it.
Aim of the work: The aim of the research was the assessment of the impact of chosen socio-demographic variables such as: age, education, marital and professional status and the place of living on functional state of women after radical surgical treatment for breast cancer.
Material and methods: The research was carried out with the application of Polish-language version of Functional Assessment of Cancer Therapy Scale-Breast (FACT-B), applied to the assessment of functional effect of breast cancer treatment. Material for the research consisted of 217 women after radical mastectomy registered at Surgical Clinic of Swietokrzyskie Oncology Centre in Kielce.
Results: Socio-demographic factors such as: the place of living (p < 0,05), education (p < 0,05), age (p = 0,051) and marital status (p < 0,005) diversified functional state of woman after mastectomy in a statistically significant way.
Conclusion: In the light of the research the patients after radical mastectomy, over 50, single, with lower level of education and living in the country require special support for their functional possibilities.
