The use of LigaSure® bipolar vessel sealing system in supracervical hysterectomy

Abstract

Objectives: The following study has been conduced to evaluate the efficacy of EBVS LigaSure® bipolar vessel sealing system as an alternative to sutures during supracervical hysterectomy.

Material and methods: Sixty patients have undergone supravaginal hysterectomy. They were divided into two groups. Half of them were operated with the use of LigaSure® vessel sealing system. The other half with standard surgical technique. Data compared in this study induced: time of the surgery, intraoperative blood loss, need for pain medication, intra and post operative complications and the peristaltic activity of the bowel after the surgery.

Results: the time of the surgery proved to be shorter , although not significantly , in the group where sutures were used compared to the other group. The hemoglobin loss after the surgery were significantly lower in the LigaSure® group.The postoperative need for pain medications were similar in both groups. The peristaltic activity of the bowel were present significantly faster after the surgery in the LigaSure® group. There were no major complications observed , however the parametrial infiltration were present at six patients in the group with sutures.

Conclusion: LigaSure® bipolar vessel sealing system is an effective and safe method of achieving haemostais during supravaginal hysterectomy, resulting in significantly reduced hemoglobin loss after the surgery.
