Smoking in a workplace

Introduction. Recently, in the scope of health politics in Poland there are being carried out antitobacco activities, aiming to above all health’s protection of non-smoking people against harmful effects of tobacco smoking. It considers also the working population characterized with a higher exposure to tobacco smoking.
Aim of the paper. The aim of the paper is to present and discuss the problem of smoking in a workplace in the view of both smokers and non-smokers.
Material and methods. The study was carried out between January – March 2008 in the biggest plants on Podkarpackie Region. The survey was conducted by means of diagnostic survey with the use of questionnaire. The chi-square test was used in statistic analyzes.
Results. It results from the study that smokers had mostly different opinions than non-smokers (p=0,0000). 53.3% of smokers did not perceived a problem of environmental tobacco smoke in a work- place. More than a half (53.2%) did not expect help from the employers in the scope of treatment against addition to nicotine, but at the same time 52.7% expressed desire to go to anti-nicotine programme.
Conclusions. Smoker’s status (active smokers, yet non-smokers, non-smokers) significantly modified the opinions of studied group about the problem of smoking in a workplace. Smokers had mostly a different opinions than yet non-smokers and non-smokers. More than a half of smokers did not perceived the problem of environmental tobacco smoke in a workplace. A large group of respondents (smokers and non-smokers) indicated that is only seldom exposure to environmental tobacco smoke (42.8%), or that problem did not consider them at all (41.9%). The majority of active smokers did not expect a help from works in the scope of treatment against addition to nicotine, but at the same time expressed desire to go to anti-nicotine programme. Smoker’s status differed studied population against their opinion about the following negative effects of tobacco smoking: health, esthetic, harmful effects of smoking for the surroundings.
