Influence of the body weight on the quality of life and the frequency of complications occurrence of people after a brain stroke

Introduction. Recent research indicate that overweight and obesity may have a relevant impact on the quality of life of people after a brain stroke. However, there are still few researches concerning connection of excessive body weight to quality of life.
The aim of the research was evaluation the quality of life of people with proper and excessive body weight as well as evaluation of the impact of body weight on frequency of complications.
Material and methods. Research included 90 subjects (47 women and 43 men) after the brain stroke with the mean age of 58. The patients were divided into two groups (according to the value of the body mass index BMI): those with proper and those with overweight and obesity. The quality of life was evaluated with the use of the WHOQOL-Bref questionnaire. The number and character of complications were also investigated.
Outcome. Reduction of the quality of life value was observed among the subjects with overweight and obesity. The quality of life deterioration referred mainly to physical functioning. Obesity and overweight did not influence significantly on other aspects of life. Increase of number of diseases (at least 1) in the group with inflated BMI has been observed.
Conclusion. Overweight and obesity influence deterioration of the quality of life as well as are factors increasing the number of complications after a brain stroke.
