Sensitivity to galvanic current in patients receiving treatment due to painful ailments in the spine and peripheral joints
Keywords:
acute pain, current density, galvanic currentAbstract
Symptoms of degenerative diseases include pain which limits patients" capacity for performing many activities of daily living, their correct locomotion performance, and fulfilling social and professional functions. Using the qualities allowing for production of endorphins, that it endogenous anaesthetics , galvanotherapy and iontophoresis often administered to patients with painful ailments in the spine and peripheral joints. The study aims at assessing sensitivity to galvanic current in patients in relation to the character and intensity of the pain, age and number of recurring painful episodes. ‘Material and method: The study group consisted of 36 patients receiving treatment in the Voivodship Hospital No 2 in Rzeszéw, and in ACTIV Rehabilitation Office in Boguchwala. The patients had been prescribed anodic galvanization or iontophoresis. For each participant a research card was filled in with ‘specifications including age, clinical diagnosis, number of painful incidents, and type of pain, as well as daily notes for pain intensity in VAS as well as current dose expressed in current density. Conclusions 1. While determining the dose of galvanic current, one should take into consideration the type of pain, the cause of pain, and number of painful incidents; 2. For patients with acute pain and for patients with the first painful incident, during the first treatment days the threshold dose should be smaller than the safe dose.
