Keywords:
explosion, politrauma, blast injuries, trauma shock, multiple organ dysfunction syndrome, septic complicationsAbstract
The paper presents the case of a 21 year old patient who sustained multiple injuries as a result of an accidental bomb blast. The victim, a student of chemistry at the Reeszow Technical University and an amateur pyrotechnician, was producing home-made explosives at his flat. The police was investigating the details of the incident. The blast caused destruction only of the vietim's flat, which proves that blast force was rather small, however, due to the proximity to the blast, primary and secondary injuries the patient sustained, were lifethreatening and caused severe disability. The patient sustained injuries to facial skeleton, both eye-balls, eardrums, torso, liver, gall-bladder, duodenum and limbs, including post-traumatic amputation of both palms. As a result, a young, active man became totally dependent on other people's help which led to psychological trauma. Due to the strength of his character, his family’s support, psychological and psychiatric help and rehabilitation, the patient regained good physical and psychological condition. Thanks to financial support, the victim had both hands prosthetised and is awaiting the implantation of a camera that will enable him to ‘see.
