Quality of life of nursing home residents and senior mature students

Abstract

Aim. The aim of this paper is to compare the quality of life of elderly residents of nursing homes and active seniors following mature students’ university courses.

Materials and methods. The examined group consisted of nursing home residents (128 persons) and senior mature students (45 persons). Nottingham Health Profile scale was used during the research.

Results. The research proved that there exists an important difference between the quality of life of nursing home residents and senior mature students. In the first group, the standardized average quality of life amounted to 60.5 whereas in the second group it reached 68.7 (0–100 scale, where 0 stands for the worst QoL and 100 for the best one).

Conclusions. General physical and mental activity combined with broad social relations is the precondition for a better quality of life both in case of nursing home residents and senior mature students.
