Effects of rehabilitation of the patients after a consecutive cerebral stroke

Cerebral stroke belongs to a neurological syndromes most frequently met in clinical practice, and is accompanied by a risk of consecutive occurrence. The aim of this paper is assessment of the effects of rehabilitation of the patients after a consecutive cerebral stroke and analysis of modified risk factors. The subject of assessment was degree of paresis (Brunnström test), intensity of spasticity (Ashworth's scale), functional efficiency, circulation competence, mental state, sphincter function, contact with environment and risk factors. Assessments of patients were performed in days of admission and discharge from hospital (average time of stay in hospital was 25 days). The studies comprised 32 patients who underwent a consecutive cerebral stroke and 16 patients rehabilitated after first cerebral stroke (control group). Rehabilitation in both group was carried out in accordance with a plan approved by the rehabilitation team. A complex rehabilitation program included kinesitherapy methods, physiotherapy, occupational therapy, speech therapy, psychotherapy and family education.
Results: All patients completed planned rehabilitation program. During stay in hospital no neurological symptoms of deterioration were observed. The statistical analysis of determined parameters has confirmed a positive influence of rehabilitation procedures on self-service and general physical efficiency in both groups of patients.
Conclusions: In the course of rehabilitation none of the patients has shown symptoms of neurological deterioration. In case of consecutive cerebral stroke there is no contraindication for administration of rehabilitation
