The bond of Ruthenians with the territory and the cultural landscape of Galicia in the second half of the 19th century – selected issues

The article explores the issue of the ties of Ruthenians with the territory and elements of the cultural landscape of Galicia in the second half of the 19 th century. Special attention is paid to the sacral symbols which originated from Eastern Christianity (churches, iconostasis, three-armed crosses and distinctive appearance of the clergy), which constituted "sanctified" centers of life for Ruthenians and not only signified their separateness in terms of the territory inhabited, but also symbolized their historical presence in Galicia. Among the most distinguished was a three-armed cross which was made manifest in the cultural landscape of Ruthenians and personified the "faith of the fathers". Over the course of the Polish-Russian debate about the liturgical elements of the Uniate Church, the sacral ones fall prey to politicization and nationalization, becoming a symbolic object of competition for influence on the territory commonly inhabited by Poles and Ruthenians.
