Functional state after hip replacement surgery in patients coming from rural area

Background: Degenerative hip joint disease constitutes a serious clinical and social problem globally. Primarily pain, but also a significant limitation of motor function has the biggest influence on a patient’s decision regarding operative treatment. However, the best hip endoprosthesis will not fulfill its task without ensuring its biological drive and mechanical stability. The aim of this study was to evaluate the functional state after hip joint replacement surgery in patients coming from rural areas.
Methods: A group of 219 patients who underwent hip replacement surgery were analyzed. A 100-point Harris’s scale as well as a self-designed questionaire was used for the analysis purposes. BMI index was calculated for all of the participants in this study. The patients were divided into the two groups: The first group contained patients from a rural area; the second group from patients living in the city.
Results: Functional state of patients, evaluated using the Harris’s scale, was significantly worse in the group from rural areas. Over half of the patients were not rehabilitated after surgery and this percentage was higher in the group of patients living in rural areas. Obesity and being overweight were more common in patients coming from rural areas, which influenced the poorer outcome of functional state in this group.
Conclusions: Hard work in agriculture and discontinuation of the rehabilitation process in the post-operative period determines a poor functional state of the patients after hip replacement surgery. Education regarding a body mass index reduction and the necessity of systematic and continuous rehabilitation in those patients qualified for hip replacement surgery is crucial.
