Introduction: Introducing the local injections of botulinum toxin (BTX-A) to the treatment for spasticity opens a new, promising chapter of treating cerebral palsy in children.
Aim: The aim of the research was to rate the efficiency of treating of functional leg joints' contractions.
Material and methods: The research is being carried out at the Children Orthopaedic Ward / Trauma Centre. The subject of the research are sixty children diagnosed with cerebral palsy, aged I-8, who have since 2002 till 2004 been intramuscularly injected the A-type botulinum toxin. The examinations are carried out individually for each child before and about four weeks after the injections. The spasticity degree, moving ability and rehabilitation course are being rated The research and its analysis is still being carried.
Results and discussion: According to the initial analysis, when children suffering from functional leg con-tractions are treated with BTX-A, the spasticity lessens in Ashwort scale and the contractions of joints become weaker. However, this is a short-term effect and it necessary to repeat the injection in order to maintain it. Repeated injection of BTX-A maintains the decrease of spasticity and the weakening ofthe contractions.
