The clinical applications of the buccal fat pad in maxillofacial surgery

Authors describe the latest reports of morphology and clinical application of buccal fat pad. Good intraoperating access, rich vascular supply and relatively much amount of tissue has contributed to development of many methods of repairing intraoral defects, where the BFP was used for the reconstruction. Singlelayer and multilayer techniques of closuring oncological maxillary defects and oroantral communications are used the most frequently. Commonly buccal fat pad has been applied in the treatment by Maxillofacial surgeons, Orthognatic surgeons, Throat specialists, Oncological surgeons, Ophtalmologists and Plastic & Reconstructive surgeons. In most cases the authors has achieved good results of surgical reconstruction and the low interest of complications. The modern reconstructions of disfigured morphology of oral cavity make possible, together with application of buccal fat pad, immediate single-phase surgery, minimize posttherapeutic suffering and restore oral cavity to damaged physiological abilities and functions.
