Hydrothorax as delayed complication of central venous catheter in neonatology – case raport

Percutaneous central venous catheters ( PCVC) have become more common in the care of very low birthweight newborns. Perforation complications ( hydrothorax, hydropericardium) occur in 0,05-3% of percutaneously inserted central lines and may develop after an interval with the line tip in superior vena cava. There is uncertainty about the pathogenesis of this complication. It probably result from erosion of the vascular wall, with or without prior intravascular catheter migration. We describe the successful resuscitation of very low birthweight newborn after sudden deterioration caused by massive pleural effusion.
