Prevalence of celiac disease in children and adolescents with diabetes mellitus type 1 in Podkarpatian Region

The prevalence of celiac disease among children with type I diabetes mellitus exceeds the prevalence of the condition in the general population. To investigate the prevalence of celiac disease in the large cohort of children and adolescents with type 1 diabetes mellitus was the aim of the study.
Material and methods: 765 children from the Podkarpatian Region with diabetes type 1 diagnosed in years 1990-2005 were enrolled into the study. Prospective serologic screening was performed in 355 children with diabetes diagnosed during 5 consecutive years between January 2000 and December 2005. Among 410 children with diabetes diagnosed in the period of 10 years - between January 1990 and December 1999, serologic tests for celiac disease were performed exclusively in children with clinical symptoms of malabsorption syndrome. Intestinal biopsy was performed in all children with positive results of serologic tests. 60
Results. Celiac disease was diagnosed in 8 out of 355 children (2,25%) screened in the years 2000– 2005 and in 3 out of 410 children with diabetes mellitus type 1 diagnosed in the years 1990-1999.
Conclusions. The prevalence of celiac disease in children and adolescents with diabetes type 1 in podkarpatian region is relatively low. Screening for celiac disease in type 1 diabetes, although costly, was an effective method to detect silent form of the disease.
