Abstract

Chronic recurrent multifocal osteomyelitis is a rare disease of unknown etiology that mainly affects children and adolescents. It is characterized by multifocal lytic bone lesions with swelling and pain. The diagnosis may be delayed because clinical and especially radiological abnormalities are suggestive of malignant diseases or septic osteomyelitis. The course of the disease is characterized by exacerbations and remissions but the long-term outcome is unclear. Antibiotics are not effective. Antiinflammatory drugs and physiotherapy are the primary choice for the treatment. Recent data indicate that bisphosphonates appear to be a safe and useful alternative in severe forms of the disease.
