The eastern churches in the Republic of Poland in the instruction from 1712 for the Nuncio Benedetto Odescalchi-Erba

For each papal representative, i.e. a nuncio, sent to a specific state, the most important indications pertaining to the mission were contained in the parliamentary instructions issued by the Roman Secretary of State. For those sent to Poland, key remarks referred to the Eastern rites, namely the Greek Catholic (Uniate) Church and the Catholic Armenian Church. As regards the nuncio B. Odescalchi-Erba, who was appointed in Poland in October 1711, two instructions have survived: one from the Congregation de Propaganda Fide and the other from the Secretary of State. Both of them stressed the fact that the situation of these communities was difficult due to the pressure of the Russian tsar towards the Uniates, and a small number of followers of the Armenian Church. Both rites were guaranteed freedom of religion, and the Holy See provided far-reaching help for them.
