Unknown heroes of World War I. Chaplains of Polish descent in American units
Keywords:
Catholic military chaplains, US Army, Polish origin, soldier, First World War, Second World WarAbstract
The paper contains information about the First World War andit concerns the spiritual life of soldiers fighting during the war. It is commonly known that the spiritual life of the soldiers was supported by spiritual and voluntary work in the army, the national guard and the navy of the United States of America. As it is indicated, the shortages were enormous, and the needs even greater, exceeding the number of available military chaplains. The paper intends to present unknown heroes of the First World War. These heroes were priests from Poland or those who had already been born on the American soil as the first generation, speaking Polish, familiar with the history and tradition of their homeland. These stories of priests show the Polish contribution, organization, as well as the courage and a sense of patriotism for the Polish motherland, and gratitude for their new American homeland. Some of them served in the USA, while others outside the country. They were united by brotherhood, honour and service to God and man.
