The coastal city of Methone, an Eretrian foundation on the Thermaic Gulf, in close proximity to the Macedonian ports of Therme and Pydna, mirrored the history of Athenian-Argead relations in a particular way. In the late 430s BC, Methone joined the Delian League and became a part of its political and economic networks. This paper explores the importance of Methone regarding Athenian-Argead relations in the Peloponnesian War, the city’s geopolitical location, involvement in trade as a hub in the northern Aegean, function as a gateway to central Macedonia, and relation to its neighbor Pydna.
