Introduction: Burns in children occur twice more frequently than in adults, and mostly in young children, who have limited perception of hazard and danger which are health and life threatening.
Study aim: The aim of the study is to analyse causes of burns and present the rehabilitation programme of children hospitalised in the Pediatric Surgery Department of St. Jadwiga the Queen Hospital No. 2 in Rzeszów.
Material and method: The studies were carried out on 220 children, who were treated for burns in the period between January 2007 and December 2008. The examined patients were aged from 14 days to 15 years old. On the basis of medical documentation the most frequent causes , kinds and extent of burns as well as the most frequent areas of body affected by burns and depth of burn injuries were selected. In order to assess body surface area burns Wallace’s Rule of Nines was applied.
Results: Among the examined children the most frequent burns are thermal burns, including scaldings which are caused by contact with hot or boiling liquid. Among the examined children the majority were infants aged from 2 weeks to 24 months old. In order to achieve a satisfactory functional effect in the treatment of children , alongside basic therapy, rehabilitation was indispensable.
Conclusions: 1. The most frequent among the examined children are thermal burns – scaldings caused by contact with hot or boiling liquid. 2. Children up to 24 months of age were the most frequent burn victims.
