The epidemiology of childhood overweight and obesity on the World, in Europe and in Poland

Authors

Abstract

The incidence of overweight and obesity is escalating in industrialized countries. A potential emerging public health issue may be the increasing incidence of childhood obesity in the world and the resulting socioeconomic and public health burden faced in all continents in the last decades. The highest prevalence of childhood overweight and obesity was found in USA, Western Europe, Pacyfic Islands and the Middle East, whereas Africa had the lowest prevalence. The few studies conducted in developing countries showed a considerably high prevalence of obesity but on the other side also the high prevalence of undernutrition among youth. In Poland childhood overweight and obesity prevalence are on medium level.
