Studies on the co-occurrence of meningomyelocele and other developmental anomalies of cerebrum and skull

The subjects of this study were children operated because of meningomyelocele during first day of life, and who later underwent an imaging examinations (USG, CT, MR). In order to determine the dependence between a level of spinal cord damage and co-occurrence of other developmental anomalies of central nervous system, the target group was divided into 2 groups: children with a high-and low-level meningomyelocele On basis of retrospective medical data concerning 42 children operated because of meningomyelocele and statistical analysis it was established that: the meningomyelocele can be accompanied by various developmental anomalies of brain and skull, additional developmental defects of brain and skull can occur in isolated or associated form, the high meningomyelocele is laden with an increased risk of occurrence at least one developmental anomaly of cerebrum and skull, hydrocephalus indicating for surgical treatment, underdevelopment of the corpus callosum.
