Modern urban market-places are an interesting field of research on the relationships between people and plants. In the 1930s, Jerzy Wojciech Szulczewski conducted an investigation of biodiversity and the use of medicinal plants offered in a muncipal market-place in Poznan (Poland). Inspired by his work, the author collected data from a modern market in the same city. The aim of this work was to compare the present sale of herbs in the city's largest marketplace with the habits of 80 years earlier. During the growing season in 2013, photographic documentation of the plants sold in the main market of the Jeżyce district of Poznań was gathered during regular visits. Only 25% of the formerly offered medicinal plants are available nowadays. The habits of selling these herbs have also changed. Species of medicinal plants documented by Szulczewski are now to be found either among ornamental herbal bouquets or sold in flowerpots for later use as recreational tea or spices. It is interesting that the term “herb” is generally limited to the potted herbs with aromatic leaves. The important role of the magic and medicinal plant cabbage thistle Cirsium oleraceum “czarcie żebro” in the life of the inhabitants was observed. A more in depth study of current beliefs and customs connected with this herb in the region is needed.
