Abstrakt

The tuberous internodes (bulbs) of bulbous oat grass (onion couch, Arrhenatherum elatius subsp. bulbosum) were found at several settlements and cremation graves across Europe. The first Polish finds come from the Roman cemetery site at Paprotki (Paprotki Kolonia site 1, the Great Masurian Lake District, NE Poland). Their presence in archaeological sites has been explained by ritual use, but their economic value as food cannot be excluded.
