Abstrakt

This article is a review of meanings and uses of plants, animals and (to a lesser extent) minerals and water in the love magic of the Jivaroan peoples – hunters-horticulturalists of the Upper Amazon (Ecuador and Peru). First I present the use of metaphors taken from the animal world in love songs belonging to the broader category of magical chants called anent. Then I review the uses of minerals, plants, animals (or their parts) in preparations of pusangas - love potions and magical objects. The review is based on existing literature about the Jivaroan peoples and, in some cases, also on my own fieldwork among Jivaroans in Peru.
