Abstrakt

Highlanders from the region frequently make references to their natural surroundings in their ornamental artefacts and folk art, including plant motifs. Some of the better known examples are stemless carline thistle (Carlina acaulis L.), Turk's cap lily (Lilium martagon L.) and edelweiss (Leontopodium alpinum Cass.). In Poland, the latter can only be found in the Tatra Mountains. Images of plants from the Tatras can be found, in the form of embroidery, on formal, traditional clothes, on everyday-use objects such as wooden chests, on furniture, and finally on paintings on glass. The surrounding landscape had, and still has, a great impact on the everyday life and folk art of the highlanders from Podhale. Its influence is so obvious that it may pass almost unnoticed.
