In 1883, Józef Rostafiński (1850-1928), a botanist and professor at the Jagiellonian University in Kraków (then Austria-Hungary), made a survey regarding the names and uses of plants in the Polish lands. The most complete version of the questionnaire contained questions regarding approximately 130 species. The present paper refers to one of them – Camelina sativa. 18 people sent 21 letters containing data on C. sativa (28 records in total, 11 different folk names of this species). The submitted data show that in the second half of the 19th c. C. sativa was still used as an oilseed plant in four regions of the Polish Lands: Wielkopolska, Kujawy, Lublin and West Prussia. It was even cultivated in the Lublin region. The oil’s main purpose was consumption, especially during fasting.
