The aim of this work is to present a concept for reorienting a selected segment of the nuclear energy sector toward a circular-economy model by utilizing depleted uranium (DU). DU is currently stockpiled as a side product generated during uranium enrichment; however, in the proposed approach it can serve as feedstock for nuclear-fuel production while simultaneously generating electricity. An executable, simulation model of a small fast reactor in a seed-blanket configuration using uranium nitride fuel UN(¹⁵N) was developed. From an environmental perspective, the concept may improve resource-use efficiency and reduce anthropogenic pressure associated with the extraction of primary raw materials. Shifting material demand from mining to the utilization of DU supports the protection of the natural environment. The proposed approach therefore aligns with the goals of sustainable and responsible energy development.
