The article presents the legal aspects of the process of informatization of civil status registration begun ten years ago under the provisions of the new Civil Status Records Law. The starting point of the considerations is to explain the concept of informatization of public administration and to indicate its main determinants and objectives. Then the implemented legal solutions aimed at the informatization of civil status registration are discussed, as well as their practical effects in three aspects: the electronification of registration processes, the use of electronic documents and the development of e-services. The conclusions point to the need to change the way users of the ICT system for handling the civil status registry are authenticated, expand the scope of e-services, and implement solutions to replace paper documents with electronic ones.
