Grooming behaviour in Hucul horses kept in a single male group
Keywords:
Hucul horses, single male group, grooming behaviourAbstract
Researches were preformed in Hucul horses herd kept in a single male group. The herd – stallion and mares with foals stayed on pastures all year, did not use rooms but only natural protections (shrubs, trees). During investigations grooming behaviour was observed as well as its type and frequency. Observed forms of grooming were connected with keeping skin clean and removing annoying external parasites (biting insect). These were: rubbing (on the fences, shrubs, trees), mud baths, mutual nipping and rolling. Frequency intensification of grooming behaviour occurrence was observed in spring time and summer time, whereas in winter time it was noticed occasionally.
