Abstract

Air pollution poses a significant threat to public health and ecosystem stability, with particulate matter (PM10, PM2,5, and PM1) being among its most critical components. The aim of this study is to review current literature data on the sources, characteristics, and impacts of particulate matter on the human body and the environment, as well as to discuss existing regulatory frameworks related to air quality. Analysis of the available studies indicates that exposure to particulate matter is associated with an increased risk of respiratory and cardiovascular diseases. Particulate matter also contributes to soil degradation, reduced plant productivity, biodiversity loss, and damage to infrastructure. The conclusions indicate that effective mitigation of the adverse effects of air pollution requires the consistent implementation of more stringent air quality standards in line with World Health Organization guidelines, as well as the adoption of sustainable development strategies, including the “zero pollution” policy objectives by 2050.
