Abstract

The concept of the exhibition Hokusai. Wandering... Japanese woodcuts from the collection of National Museum in Krakow that took place in 2021 has envisioned presentation of works by brilliant Japanese artist, presenting him in context of Edo period and ukiyo-e trend – pictures of the Floating World, taking particular notice of the exceptional value of woodcuts. Their technical mastery puts graphics in line with the most celebrated Japanese works from seventeenth to nineteenth century. Both the exhibition and wrought publications have invited to the metaphorical wandering through Japanese landscapes, around Mt. Fuji, into the world of legends, classical literature and its interpretations translated into paintings. By explaining historical, social and literary contexts as well they have opened the space of the greatest artistic values, present in the private collection of the National Museum in Krakow. Memories of the exhibition became an excuse to tell about its concept from the curator’s point of view, but most importantly to present some of the terms that are worth coming back to and using them as the source of neverending studies and inspiration.
