Abstract

The aim of the article is presentation of activities the National School Council in Galicia in the first decade of its functioning. During this period, it involved the reorganization of existing elementary (folk) schools and the creation of new school facilities. At the beginning it was presented legal and organizational conditions for creating a network of schools by the National School Council at the turn of the 60s and 70s in the nineteenth century. Then, its role was discussed in terms of impact on the society of Galicia regarding organizing them. It also shows the difficulties that the National School Council had to overcome. The text uses archival sources, legal acts and historical literature. The article can help in research on elementary education on Polish lands during the partitions, especially in Galicia.
