The role of an Ukrainian women in the development of Drohobych cultural life in the interwar period

Abstract

During the interwar period social conditions of Galician cultural development inspired women’s active participation in musical and educational spheres i.e., transformation of female socio-cultural stereotypes.

In the 1920s–1930s of the 20th century Galician man was considered to be a leader, a statesman, a public figure, whereas the role of a woman was limited to that of a home protector and only sometimes she was treated as a partner with a „non-state” activity within cultural context. Nevertheless, the gender played a considerable role in the cultural formation of the Galician society.

In Galician cultural environment a special type of a woman’s personality emerged – a participant of a music movement following a specific behavioral and social adaptation model with distinct both personal (purposefulness, diligence, striving for self-improvement and self-development, practicality and high energy) and individual psychological traits, values and motivation for cultural and public activity.

The participants of women cultural movement stand out due to more expressed national motifs in their social activity and the need for creative self-expression. Drohobych women were engaged in the formation process of innovative forms of musical and educative life (educational, cultural institutions etc.), foundation of women’s organizations (Ukrainian Women’s Union), choral, theatrical, instrumental societies. They contributed considerably to the effective impact of the above mentioned factors on the region’s cultural life.
