Invading species of turtle jeopardizing the stability of freshwater ecosystems of the moderate zone
Keywords:
North American turtle, invading speciesAbstract
In the present article results of observation of the group of North American freshwater turtle kept in the artificial container outside, meeting their essential habitat requirements were presented. All-year-round observation concerned the three-year-old sojourn of animals in the container, taking into account both the activity of the summer season, and the winter rest. Representatives of observed kinds and subspecies of turtle, took the hibernation in climatic conditions prevailing in Poland in the late-autumn period and to arouse out oneself in spring months. As a result of intensive preying of turtle green frogs (Rana sp.) disappeared from a body of water, as well as water milfoil (Myriophyllum sp.). Reptiles devoured also a frogspawn and larval stages – tadpoles of the reproducing there grey toad (Bufo bufo). In relation to such a considerable havoc made in the short time by a small group of these animals, too highly probable one should regard, that decorative turtle as the entire group, can be potentially dangerous for ecosystems of southern and centre Europe, as the invading species.
