Challenges in working with people with intellectual disabilities in the opinion of the employees of a Community Self-Help Home in Wola Raniżowska

Abstract

Community Self-help Homes are support institutions for people with various types of disabilities. They provide multidimensional assistance, ranging from medical care, through psychological and therapeutic support, to teaching simple activities necessary in everyday life. The aim of the research was to find out the work of people who take care of people with disabilities on a daily basis. An important element was to pay attention to subjective feelings about professional responsibilities, job satisfaction, and the threat of professional burnout. In this study qualitative methods of collecting information were used; the technique of data collection was individual in-depth interview. The research was carried out in ŚDS in Wola Raniżowska. In the opinion of the caregivers themselves, it is not an easy help, but, as it was emphasized, it is needed, in which the effects of activities are not difficult to notice. This is one of the many strengths of working in the institution, however, this work carries the risk of professional burnout, which is highlighted as a big minus.
