Factors Determining the Parents’ Choice of Extracurricular Classes

Abstract

Parents noticing the lack of individual child development in the formal education system are looking for it in informal education, i.e. after school activities. Extracurricular activities are a market that is growing and becoming more and more diversified. The work presents the role of extracurricular activities in the education system and the factors influencing the parents’ decisions in choosing these classes based on surveys were determined. It was shown that the subject of extracurricular activities as well as its coherence with parents’ beliefs play a key role in their choice. The location of classes and their quality are also important factors. Research has shown that parents are willing to bear financial costs to maximize the probability of children’s development that will pay off in the future. The results obtained and the conclusions given can be used by institutions organizing extracurricular activities in order to better fit to the real needs and prospects of parents.
