Names and name variants of bilingual Ukrainian children living in Poland: Some aspects of naming

The article deals with researching of the names and their variants of bilingual/ multilingual Ukrainian children who were born in 2012-2024 years and live in Poland. The purpose of the article is to find out what names parents choose for their children, how they adapt their writing forms and what variants of names, including diminutives, are used in everyday life at home, in educational institutions, which variants children choose when introducing themselves, etc. The material is collected and processed using sociolinguistic research methods demonstrated the role of names in identifying and defining the identity of a child in a foreign language environment. It is based on a questionnaire for parents/ caregivers consisting of ten questions. Like other linguistic units in a bilingual/multilingual situation, names are influenced by interference and change their original form depending on the circumstances and the linguistic environment. This socio-onomastic analyse demonstrates role and place of first names in bilingual or multilingual situation and their meaning in children self-identity abroad.
