How to accompany those who are leaving?

The authors share their experience of Samaritan service in a home hospice. They discuss negative psychological reactions occurring in patients in a long-drawn agony such as: fear, anger, depression, loneliness, which lower the quality of life, and positive reactions, such as: hope, faith and love, when a person accepts his/her spirituality and ability to love and experience God in a transcendental dimension. They take a view that patients should be informed about their condition in accord with the truth, but in the way which preserves their hope that death is the crossing of the threshold into the outstretched arms of God. They emphasize the importance for those who suffer of the sacrament of the last rites given by a priest, as it prepares man for a peaceful passage. Thereby, it becomes an act of reckoning and forgiveness, an act of embracement of God.
