Commemorative street names of Czestochowa

Abstract

The aim of the article is to analyze the commemorative street names found in the contemporary naming of Czestochowa and the motivation for giving them, taking into account the historical and cultural background of the city. The commemorative names of the streets of Czestochowa result from the desire to perpetuate in the public consciousness the most important local and state events, historical figures, well-known public figures of Poland and the world, as well as people from religious circles. These names are about the recognized values, attitudes, views and cultural heritage of the region or country. However, they do not always reflect the way the inhabitants of Czestochowa perceive the world around them in a social and mental dimension, as evidenced by the resolutions of the city council concerning the naming of streets or their changes, very often imposed by local employees of local government institutions, due to political changes in the country.
