The paper deals with several important issues concerning programs and functions of the traditional school and the way they clash with the problems of our contemporary civilizational stage and cultural context. The study exposes the fact that in today’s globalised world, technological revolution is changing the way people communicate with one another, making it universally possible to communicate by means of the written word. However, this poses a problem for the contemporary school. The paper presents some definite actions and offers specific solutions to the problem. The title of the paper, which refers to Stefan Zeromski’s well-known short story, is meant to draw the reader’s attention to the complexity of the issues discussed and emphasise the special importance of the teaching profession.Downloads
