The aim of this paper is to identify the state of art in the field of non-legal conditions of social participation at the local level in Poland and to formulate recommendations for further scientific research in the indicated research area. A systematic literature review was carried out in this study, based on scientific knowledge resources available in selected scientific databases. Based on the literature search and a critical analysis of the content of publications, the state of art, including its gaps, was identified and recommendations were made for the directions of future research into the extra-legal determinants of social participation at the local level in Poland. The results of the systematic literature review allowed the conclusion to be drawn that the state of current knowledge points to the socio-cultural characteristics of individual local communities and the actions of local authorities as the main extra-legal determinants of social participation.
