Iceland was hit hard by the 2008 financial crisis. It has created a serious threat to its economic, social and political stability, and, consequently, to its national identity and sovereignty. Iceland became almost bankrupt. At the same time, Iceland was recognized by the Australian Institute for Economics and Peace as the safest country in the world. The aim of the article is to answer the question: what makes Iceland consistently recognized as one of the safest countries in the world for over 15 years, both in military and non-military terms?
