The subject of the research in this work is culinary metaphors that shape the comments by the experts and journalists during the coverage of Plus League volleyball matches on the Polsat Sport channel. Formal analysis of selected structures supplemented by a short description of the sport-media discourse and an outline of the specifics of the correlation between image and word in selected broadcasts was conducted in the framework of cognitive research using the theory of cognition proposed by George Lakoff and Mark Johnson. A wider perspective of the problem is also presented – a discourse analysis anchored in semiotics. As a result, the functions that the analysed type of linguistic creation and interpretation perform in the sport commentary have been specified emphasizing that they are both derived from the goals of the media broadcaster and the conditioning of the conventions within the analysed media genre.
