The author poses a question about what actually is lost in inadequate translations. An elegiac poem by Seamus Heaney, dedicated to the memory of Zbigniew Herbert, is used as an example. The author demonstrates to what degree deficient translation may lead to incorrect comprehension of the poet’s undertaking, and may contribute to wanting interpretations of the poem.
